Perms have changed a great deal, and the reputation has not caught up. Modern perming is far gentler than the chemistry of thirty years ago, and modern styling aims at loose beachy wave and body far more often than tight uniform curl.
We do both directions: perms to add curl or wave, and straight perms to relax and loosen texture.
Jaclyn works extensively in perming — she trained at Blaine Beauty School in Massachusetts, co-owned a salon with her mother, and works as a colour and cutting educator. Twenty-three years of experience, and perming is genuinely part of her practice rather than something the salon tolerates.
Who it’s for
- Fine, flat hair that will not hold body or a style
- Anyone wanting a loose, lived-in wave without daily heat styling
- Hair that drops out of curls within an hour
- Straight perms: coarse or unruly texture wanting relaxing without going fully straight
- Anyone spending real time with an iron or wand every morning
Who it isn’t for
We’d rather tell you now than halfway through.
- Heavily bleached or highlighted hair Perming compromised hair risks serious damage. We will assess honestly and may decline.
- Anyone wanting curl removed permanently That is Japanese Thermal Straightening.
- Anyone expecting a specific Instagram curl Your result depends on your hair's own texture and porosity. We will show you realistically what to expect.
- Recently keratin-treated hair These do not layer. Timing matters.

The first 48 hours
Do not wash your hair for two full days after a perm. The bonds are still settling, and washing early can relax the curl before it has set.
- No washing for 48 hours
- No tight ponytails or clips that crease the hair
- Avoid heavy heat styling in the first week
Before & after
Aftercare
- Sulfate-free products
- Scrunch dry rather than rubbing
- Diffuse rather than blast-drying
- Deep condition regularly — perming is drying by nature
Who performs this
Questions
Are perms still tight and frizzy?
No. Rod size and technique control curl size, and modern formulations are considerably gentler. Loose wave is what most clients ask for now.
How long does it last?
Three to six months typically, growing out gradually rather than at a line. [CONFIRM]
Can I perm coloured hair?
It depends entirely on condition. Lightened hair is the main concern. We will assess and tell you honestly.
What is a straight perm?
The opposite chemistry — relaxing and loosening texture rather than adding it. Gentler than Japanese Thermal Straightening and not permanent in the same way.
Will it damage my hair?
Perming is a chemical service, so condition matters. On healthy hair, done properly, it is well tolerated. That is what the consultation determines.
Can I still straighten it sometimes?
Yes, with heat protectant. It will return to wave after washing.
